Italian citizens moving to European Union countries, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein and inCountries with which special agreements have been stipulated, can benefit from thedirect health careby presenting the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or the documentation required by the individual agreements.

Italian citizens who travel to countries where there are no bilateral agreements on health care, they are advised to take out an insurance policy before travelling.

Citizens holding an employment contract under Italian law working abroad can request reimbursement of expenses for health care services received. For more information on the categories involved and the refund procedure, you can consult thewebsite of the Ministry of Health.

The highly specialized treatments abroad are paid by the National Health Service, exceptionally, for services that cannot be obtained in our country promptly or in an adequate form. They must be previously authorized by the local ASL. For more information, refer towebsite of the Ministry of Health.

Citizens permanently residing abroad and registered with AIREwho temporarily return to Italy, must pay the regional tariffs for all health services, including emergencies. In the case of Italian citizens registered with AIRE,holders of pensions provided by Italian social security institutionsthat is to sayItalian emigrant citizens (born in Italy),however, they are recognized free of chargeurgent hospital servicesfor a maximum period of90 daysfor each calendar year, if they do not have their own insurance coverage. In order to obtain urgent hospital services, one must be signedsubstitutive declaration of deed of notorietyin which you declare, in addition to your status ofemigrated(certified by date, place of birthin Italy, residence abroad and Italian citizenship), that you do not have public or private health insurance coverage.

Italian citizens who transfer their residence to a State with which no agreement is in force with Italy lose the right to health care provided by the National Health Service and will therefore have to provide for it independently, according to the procedures established by the country of destination.
